Income has never seemed more elusive. Interest rates in the UK have stalled at an all-time low, economic growth remains sluggish and inflationary pressures continue to intensify. Against this backdrop, cash deposits and government bonds - the traditional havens for the income-seeking investor - have lost much of their appeal.
However, income-seeking investors do not have to resign themselves to a low-yielding portfolio. Equity income funds can offer a higher-than average level of income, accompanied by the prospect of long-term capital appreciation.
