Just Retirement: How to identify vulnerable clients

Who is a vulnerable client? At first glance this appears to be a fairly straight forward question to answer, however vulnerability is an inherently complex area.

Therefore, Just Retirement’s technical bulletin seeks to summarise some of the key indicators, as well as highlight some of the risks and benefits of being able to work with these clients, and support them effectively.

Just Retirement outline the definition of ‘vulnerable’; the size of the issue; the importance of identifying risk factors and assessing an individual’s mental capacity.

As well as reflecting on some of the key areas of vulnerability, it also includes an ‘aide memoire’ to help you formulate your own approach towards vulnerability. It considers the following five areas:

  • Policy
  • Client
  • Advice requirements
  • Presentation of information
  • Tailored approach
