Put your future in good hands - your own

In the last few weeks I have shared with you some ideas on how goal setting can help you in 2020. Hopefully those that want to change have started to think about what their goals could be. The first step in effective goal setting is making sure you're clear about what your objectives in life are. Once you've done that, you must write them down, mapping out how to achieve your goals, with these 4 key points in mind:

  • Your goal must be achievable

The biggest barrier to goal setting is failing in the past. If you're consistently setting goals that you don't achieve, you're building a collection of failure. Start with smaller goals that will inspire you to continue.

  •  Your goal must be believable

If you don't believe you can succeed, then you'll not be motivated to achieve it. Believe it and you'll see it.

  •  Your goal must be inspiring.

Inspiration and motivation are the fuel that will drive you to your goals. Be honest. If you're not inspired by your goals, will you ever achieve them?

  • Your goal must have a deadline.

Open-ended goals usually have one thing in common they're never achieved. Set realistic deadlines.

I firmly believe in the words of Pablo Picasso:

Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.”

Here is a template you can use as a plan to write down your goals. But first here are some tips that may help you complete it:

  • In plain English write down what you want to achieve. Make it believable and in your own words so you can share this
  • Be clear why you want to achieve this goal. What benefits will it provide for you, your family and business?
  • Write down where you are starting from so you know the destination your heading towards and can measure progress
  • Detail the steps you will take to achieve your goal, this is your action plan
  • Be clear about who can help you succeed
  • Specify when you will achieve this goal, or it will remain a dream
  • Make sure you know how you will measure success and failure
  • Finally sign your goals and commit to them. This is your contract with yourself.

Why don’t you try it now?
