Aviva Investors: Sainsbury’s planned merger with Asda: who is in the money?

At the end of April, details emerged of a possible merger between Sainsbury’s and Asda that could – should it go ahead - result in the creation of the UK’s largest grocery retailer1. While the overall impact is unlikely to become clear for another 18 months or so, it will nonetheless have considerable ramifications for other players and suppliers in the grocery retailing sector.

Neither customers nor suppliers will benefit from Asda & Sainsbury joining together. UK's big supermarkets have a long history of unfair practices towards suppliers.

Someone unfair in one way has a track record, so probably unfair to customers and staff too, though it will have been more subtle.

Why do the supermarket executives look so uncomfortable, even before the questions started? Do they know they're on thin ice?
